Lana. Earth & Energy

Svetlana Matusa, known as Lana, stands out in the world of art for her exceptional talent as an academic painter and ceramic artist. Born in 1959 in Pancevo, Serbia, Lana embarked on a journey that would see her traverse the fields of chemical engineering at The Technology University before finding her true passion in the arts. Her academic pursuit culminated in 1989 at the University of Applied Arts and Design, specifically in the Department for Sculpture Ceramic, at the Art University in Belgrade, Serbia. This foundational journey laid the groundwork for a career that has been as diverse as it has been successful.

Lana’s art is a unique fusion of her technical background and her deep, personal connection to the natural world. This blend is especially evident in her work post-1999, following her move to Iceland. The Icelandic landscape, with its stark contrasts of ice, lava, and moss, serves as a continuous source of inspiration for her. Lana’s work is characterized by an effort to capture the essence of these natural phenomena, translating the rugged beauty of the Icelandic outdoors into tangible art forms. Her ceramic sculptures and paintings are not mere representations but are imbued with the spirit of the Icelandic wilds, echoing the serenity, power, and unpredictability of nature itself.

An acclaimed member of several art associations including ULUPUDS (Serbia), UPIDIV (Voivodina), SIM (Iceland), and others, Lana’s influence and recognition span both her native Serbia and her adopted home of Iceland. Her study of Japanese ceramics in 1995 at the Shigaraki Institute for Ceramic Studies in Japan introduced her to new perspectives and techniques, further enriching her artistic approach. The Japanese Zen philosophy, with its emphasis on simplicity, nature, and mindfulness, deeply influenced her work, fostering a profound respect for clay as a “living material” subject to the laws of nature.

Lana’s career is marked by over 160 exhibitions, including 20 solo showcases, and numerous international symposiums, establishing her as a revered figure in the art world. Her creations are part of prestigious collections both public and private, reflecting the wide appeal and deep resonance of her work.
At the heart of Lana’s artistry is a profound dialogue with the material world. She describes her relationship with clay as reciprocal, a constant exchange between artist and medium that shapes both the sculpture and the sculptor. Her work embodies the principles of patience, respect for natural processes, and the pursuit of harmony with the environment. Lana’s art is a testament to the transformative power of embracing one’s surroundings, finding beauty in imperfection, and the continuous interplay between human creativity and the raw elements of nature.

Lana’s journey from a prospective architecture student to a celebrated artist is a story of unexpected turns, deep reflection, and unwavering commitment to her craft. Her work not only captures the essence of the landscapes that inspire her but also serves as a bridge between cultures, showcasing the universal language of art and nature’s role in inspiring human creativity. Through her sculptures and paintings, Lana invites us to see the world through her eyes: as an endless source of inspiration, beauty, and insight.
