Laufey. Provocative flow

Born in the vibrant city of Reykjavík in 1961, and raised amidst the serene landscapes of Dalasýsla, Laufey Jensdóttir has carved a distinctive niche in the realm of visual arts, both as a creator and educator. Embarking on her academic journey, Laufey laid her foundational stones at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2002, followed by a Diploma in Art Education in 2003. Her passion for the arts was further nurtured through studies at Fjölbrautarskólinn í Breiðholti (1997-1999) and The Kópavogur Art School (1998-1999), coupled with an exploration of Technical Drawing at The Reykjavík Technical School (1982-1983), after completing her education at Menntaskólinn við Sund in 1982.

Laufey Jensdóttir is a connoisseur of ceramics, a medium through which she channels her profound connection with the natural world. Her artistic philosophy is deeply rooted in celebrating the inherent beauty of raw materials, allowing the unpredictability of the creative process to guide the evolution of her work. This approach manifests in her art as a harmonious dance between structure and spontaneity, where the accidental flow and irregularity of forms are not merely embraced but elevated to the core of her artistic expression.

Her oeuvre is a testament to the principles of rawness, accidental flow, irregularity, variety, quantity, and multitude. Laufey’s penchant for blending diverse materials, creating exaggerated decorations, and drawing inspiration from out-of-context elements underscores her belief in the artistry of provocation and playful irreverence. Her works are a vibrant celebration of the unexpected, where the conventional boundaries of art are both questioned and expanded.

Beyond her personal creations, Laufey Jensdóttir is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of artists as an art teacher at Rimaskóli Reykjavik. She also helms a workshop in Garðabær, where her influence extends beyond the studio to the heart of the community. Her commitment to promoting art and supporting fellow artists in Garðabær was recognized in 2009 when she was honored with the title of “Town Artist of the Year,” a testament to her significant contributions to the local arts scene.

Through her work and teaching, Laufey Jensdóttir invites us to reconsider the beauty in imperfection and the creative potential that lies in the union of diverse elements. Her unique approach not only defines her personal style but also serves as a beacon for aspiring artists, encouraging them to explore the untamed territories of their imagination.
